Relatively untouched by the two world wars, this area of France is alive with its long history and architecture. Prehistoric caves, Roman ruins, medieval châteaux, churches, abbeys, and old water mills abound. Much can be explored on foot and on bicycle. Several websites to consult include that of our own town of Montbron , that of nearby La Rochefoucauld , and that of our department of Charente .

Lavaud’s guests have full access to the property, including its swimming pool, park, library, and cinema room. The 10 acre park, with its many century old trees, runs for several hundred meters alongside the Tardoire river, a river known locally for its fishing. The park also links into several hiking and cycling trails, ranging from the easy to the more difficult. Golf, canoeing, and tennis are all a 5-10 minute drive from Lavaud.

Lavaud is a good hub from which to visit some of southwest France’s internationally known attractions. Most are one to two hours drive, and include (but are by no means limited to!) the cities of Angoulême , Bordeaux , and La Rochelle , the still-intact medieval towns of Sarlat and Brantôme , the prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux , the porcelaines of Limoges , the wines of Cognac and the Bordeaux region.

In 2010 Lavaud is sponsoring two 1-week cyling tours and a 4-day art workshop. Please click on the appropriate picture for more information.
